Dust from Major Las Vegas Construction Projects: Our Office Is Investigating

 

Large roadway and infrastructure projects are underway across the Las Vegas Valley, including the I-215/Summerlin Parkway interchange project, the Reimagine Boulder Highway project, and other large construction sites involving heavy grading, hauling, paving, utility work, and soil disturbance. Public project information identifies Las Vegas Paving Corporation as involved with the I-215/Summerlin Parkway interchange reconstruction, a multi-year project involving new bridges, roadway widening, ramps, retaining walls, storm drainage facilities, sidewalks, and utility relocation work. The Reimagine Boulder Highway project is also an active 7.5-mile Henderson corridor project involving roadway reconstruction, storm drain work, transit lanes, sidewalks, lighting, landscaping, and other major surface improvements.

 

Our office is investigating whether dust from large Las Vegas-area construction projects has caused harm to nearby homeowners, tenants, businesses, and residents. Construction dust is not just an inconvenience. Fugitive dust can enter homes, clog air-conditioning systems, coat vehicles, damage outdoor furniture and landscaping, aggravate breathing conditions, irritate eyes and throats, disrupt sleep, and interfere with the normal use and enjoyment of property.

 

Clark County recognizes the seriousness of construction-related dust. Large construction projects with 50 acres or more of actively disturbed soil may be required to maintain a Dust Control Monitor with authority to ensure dust-control measures are implemented, including inspections, recordkeeping, deployment of resources, and shutdown or modification of construction activities when necessary. Clark County also maintains dust-control permitting requirements for construction and temporary commercial activities.

This investigation follows reports from residents living near major construction activity who describe repeated dust plumes, early-morning truck and equipment traffic, noise, bright night-work lighting, property contamination, air-conditioning problems, loss of outdoor use, and health symptoms such as coughing, burning eyes, throat irritation, and sleep disruption.

We are particularly interested in hearing from people living or working near Las Vegas Paving construction sites, including projects near I-215, Boulder Highway, Henderson, Summerlin, and other large valley-wide roadway or utility projects.
